The Breeze is created on a naturally shed fragment from a 200-year-old Crimean Pine at Tyntesfield, Bristol. In my bark series, I often begin with a tangible form or shape that reveals itself within the fragment, allowing the natural silhouette to guide the creative process. Here, that silhouette became the outline of a woman's head — her hair drifting into soft, swirling currents of air.
The hand-painted blue lines follow the bark’s natural contours, capturing a moment of quiet movement, a breath held between stillness and motion. Gold leaf traces the edges like a whisper of light, reinforcing both the fragility and resilience of the material.
This piece took shape slowly over several months. Working with bark allowed me to reconnect with physical texture, steady repetition, and the grounding rhythm of hand-painted detail. Creating The Breeze became part of my healing — a space where both my mind and body could find calm.
The Breeze honours the gentle forces that move through us, reshape us, and remind us to breathe again.
